Under Starling On the Making Of “Wojtek”
What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of "Wojtek?"
The song was initially written while messing round on an acoustic guitar. I was playing a Ben Howard style of plucking while slapping the guitar body, eventually this developed into the main intro melody. After a while this riff made its way to an electric guitar and then a synthesiser.
Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Wojtek?"
When we finished writing “Wojtek” we had so many riff and melody ideas, that it was so hard to pick the most prominent ones. Thankfully during our time in the studio we had so many different instruments at our disposal which really helped to inspire and so the song started to take shape.
How do you feel "Wojtek" represents your artistic identity or musical evolution?
“Wojtek” was a lot of fun to make and record, we really got a chance to try new things and bring the song to life. This was actually the first time we delved into playing some melodies on
analogue synthesisers rather than guitars. We definitely feel that we tapped more into our dance side of music writing with this one.
Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?
It is hard to pinpoint exactly where each song is inspired from, but mostly it’s from different life events, everyday events or even stories we hear from time to time. Each member of the band has such different tastes in music that also contributes to new ideas and inspiration.
How do you continuously grow and evolve as a band?
We are constantly writing, jamming and listening to new music and new bands. We are inspired every day to evolve and develop our sound and stage performance. We love playing music and as long as we have that, we will keep growing.
