The Footlight District On the Making Of “Cut My Heart Out”

What was the creative process like for this particular "Cut My Heart Out?"

The creative process for “Cut My Heart Out,” was a very different experience. Being our first ballad or “anti-ballad” as it were, it was such a raw and emotional experience. Coming straight from the recent breakup of a band member, it had all those raw emotions, mixed with the challenge of trying something new with our music. In the end, it was a very fulfilling experience.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "Cut My Heart Out" to life?

Working with Russell and Enrico on this song was amazing! We kinda went to them, and we’re like “hey we wrote a ballad” (which we had the working title of “ballad salad”), and they were like “yes!”. We have to give them a lot of credit for helping bring this vision to life, they saw what we were going for, and really helped us to capture those emotions. Adding in only the necessary bits, to not let the song get over complicated.

What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

The music video was so much fun to make! We have to give a big shoutout to our friend Rob Tovar, who let us come in and use his space to shoot (and make a big mess lol). We rented a prop heart from a prop rental shop, that came in a sketchy fluid-filled jar, and then covered it in fake blood. Which honestly, was probably our favorite part of the shoot!

How do you continuously grow and evolve as a band?

We always be trying new sounds and mixing new genres into our garage rock sound. We love trying new things with our music, and looking for ways that our music can engage the audience when we play it live. We always have a backlog of things we want to try with our music!

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they impacted your own sound?

We love some classic rock and roll, like The Rolling Stones, Joan Jett, and Cream, along with some of our modern-day inspiration! Like Jack White, Cage The Elephant, Band of Skulls, Frank Carter, and Dorothy. We always love finding new bands and are always checking out new music as well!
