Yellow Sam “Idols”

When you say noise, you imagine distortion, industrial sounds, grunge, rock, avant-garde, dissonance. Similarly, the term “shoegaze” also evokes a type of memories and associations. However, Yellow Sam’s “Idols” seems to go about a different direction from the established norms about a noise-infused track or a shoegaze song. Interestingly, although it utilizes a very distorted sonic element, it seems to dive deeper into the spiritual aspect.

“Idols” doesn’t lack of the same quality and trance-like experience from a peaceful instrumental track. Even within its severely distorted visual imagery, the obscure vocal melodies seem to invite listeners into an illuminating journey. The constant chaos and disturbance also creates a continuity and consistency that serves as a repetitive and safe environment for a trance-like state. On the other hand, the melodic notes sparsely painted an environment that is deeply connected to nature.

Yellow Sam seems to be the kind of artist who creates a rain forest with noise and frequencies, which is rare and special. The tune itself is the proof that music isn’t a linear association between sounds and impressions, although in most cases, listeners do. Every genre and sonic palette has the same capacity that goes beyond what was predictable and logical. Much like building something on a material that at first seems so unlikely to succeed. That’s the true beauty here in Yellow Sam’s “Idols”
