Matt DeAngelis On the Making Of “Speak For A Moment”
Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in "Speak For A Moment?"
“Speak For A Moment” is a song that exemplifies my determination of living in the present and fulfilling desires to make a difference in the world. There is limited time for us to do so, being how abrupt and exponential life truly is. While this is a main theme, I lyrically state how I believe that everyone carries the potential to change the world for the better, but one must speak and break their silence for that potential to be unlocked. In a matter of words, I state how we seldom turn our attention to the macrocosm of life, where there is only a moment in time to fossilize your mark.
How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "Speak For A Moment" to life?
While I am the main songwriter for this track, my producers and engineers Bill Kennedy, Tom Conran, and my father John DeAngelis play integral roles in shaping the song to its final composition. My father has contributed in writing musical parts on top of the already written song. As a team, we mold the song in stages and discuss which instruments sound best in certain sections of the song. The public hears just one version of what was many hours of trial and error in the studio to make the final product the best it can be.
What do you like the best about this track?
What I like best about this track is the consistent upbeat tempo that differs from some of my other songs. The goal for this song is to keep a driving beat that listeners can enjoy. I believe this song has exemplified a purpose for life, where the rhythm is like a heartbeat, constant and a driving force.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?
I began songwriting at the age of 8 on the piano and have been writing since. My father is a professional musician and weaned me on a classical yet progressive background. I began performing more frequently at the age of 16 and have joined a cover band in the last couple years that plays throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. In the midst of now frequent performances, I have also been recording in the studio and have had the honor of working with legends Liberty DeVitto and Richie Cannata, members of Billy Joel’s original band. These experiences have helped shape me into the artist, songwriter, and overall musician I am today, as I continue to hone my craft and look to endure increasing success in the near future.
Can you share a valuable lesson or piece of advice that you have learned along your musical journey?
I have learned how important persistence is in the music and entertainment industry. It is essential to maintain confidence and not let distractions or disappointments affect your outlook on your career. I am still learning along the way, but have begun to master the trials and tribulations of living in this rewarding yet particularly harsh industry.
