heavy on the heart. On the Making Of “Catch Me If I Fall”

What was the creative process like for this particular "Catch Me If I Fall?"

Costas: Our upcoming EP ‘It’s You That Has To Think’ was written over the course of a 10-week period in the summer of 2021. I was going through some emotionally trialing times that summer and was having a hard time sleeping through the nights. One night I started reading through an old journal. It was stuff I had written 10-15 years prior. Probably my first time reading through all that stuff since I wrote it back then. The next morning I picked up a guitar and started writing something that reminded me of the night before. The notion was talking to my younger self and letting that person know everything is going to be okay. But I started getting chills when I realized that my younger self was talking back and also letting me know that everything is going to be okay. Honestly, it was the ghost of the past, who I was 10-15 years prior reminding myself in the present day to keep moving forward that inspired that song.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Catch Me If I Fall?"

Nikki: Nikki: I think writing “Catch me if I fall” was one of the moments that Costas and I realized we had parallel childhoods and we could really use that together to Channel into our writing and make something special.

Costas: The song was about 85% done lyrically when I brought it into the studio. I remember being in the studio with the song on loop trying to finish the remaining vocals before Nikki got back that day. I remember writing the lyrics “I had enough, Catch me if I fall” and going oh my god this is it. I remember her walking back into the control room and I just sang that part out loud for her and we both started going “Yes, that’s it” Hearing that in context with the song for the first time out loud was such a breakthrough moment during this EP. I know it summed up exactly how I felt in that moment and for the last couple of months and I believe Nikki felt the exact same way. So to watch that translate out really was a vibe.

What did you enjoy most about making this single?

Nikki: Honestly I remember leaving the recording studio after recording this song and listening to it about 100 times on the drive home and smiling from ear to ear thinking this has to be my all-time favorite song. No matter who you are you can relate to thinking back in a time in your life and wishing you could go back to that exact moment and tell yourself everything was gonna be okay!

Costas: Honestly, this single and every other song, there’s so much beauty in the creative and production process. From the initial riff to a fully polished finished track and every step in between. When writing and recording music, I feel so in touch with my inner self. I feel like it’s a therapy session. It’s just a beautiful experience. It’s amazing watching something come from nothing and a song is no different. It’s literal magic-making music. It’s one of the most personal, intimate, relieving & gratifying experiences I’ve ever felt.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

Nikki: we draw all of our ideas from our own past life experiences then try to see how we can make it relatable to others. Then the ideas just flow

Costas: Life. Plain and simple, haha. The way things make me feel. The ups, downs, and in-betweens. They all shape who we are as individuals and I have never found a better way of getting in touch with those feelings outside of music. It’s my way of capturing a certain moment in my life, a certain feeling in my life, and putting it out there for whoever in the world to do what they want with. Certain chords, riffs, and phrases can instantly bring me back to a certain time, feeling, or emotion and once I find that feeling is struck, I take it and run with it. That’s how I write music.

What has been the most memorable experience or achievement in your music career so far?

Nikki: As far as with this band Costas and I started this band 2 years before we played our first show, between my maternity leave and finding other band members to complete the group sometimes we both thought we would never see this band become anything. Now Seeing everything we worked on actually became a reality has been absolutely incredible. Another personal achievement of mine is that before starting this band Costas and I worked on a solo music project together and two of my songs got picked up for a movie and a tv show and I think that is pretty freakin cool.

Costas: My former band (PRSNA) had the privilege and opportunity to open for Third Eye Blind and Twenty One Pilots. Third Eye Blind is one of my favorite bands and one of my biggest influences musically. That was an amazing day and something I will never forget. But with heavy on the heart. this young in our career, our debut show with The Color Fred and Alex Melton was an amazing experience. To finally bring original music back to a sold-out crowd after years of not playing live was amazing. It reminded me why I love this so much. It reaffirmed why I do what I do. Another memorable experience was playing Jones Beach Bandshell in July of 2023. I have wanted to play that stage since I was a little 10-year-old kid just getting into music and playing. That was a great crowd, great vibes, the beach and ocean in the background and a small little personal milestone.
