davvn On the Making Of “care less.”

What was the creative process like for this particular "care less.?"

“Care less” was inspired by the feelings of growing apart from your childhood friends and just any bad friend in general, who you feel like you owe something to but also can wreak havoc in your life. We went into the studio feeling angsty and a little bit nostalgic and started just writing, this was with one of our good friends John Townsend in Nashville. I think those first verse lines -  “Wish you’d take your shoes off before you walk all over me, you make me bite my tongue until it starts to bleed” just came out and from there we were cruising. John laid down this really cool riff for the verse, and then we just wanted to amp it up even more in the chorus. The whole thing was written in maybe a few hours, it was a really cathartic process to let those feelings out.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for "care less.?"

When we brought the track to our producer Andrew Gomez, we had a really fleshed out demo track together - there was a good amount of synth production from Ben Becker who’d helped us with the track, and also a lot of demo guitars by John and some drums and bass by Mike. Andrew was able to add even more emotion and make the track just feel huge. He added his signature guitar and drum production to it and really made it feel like we tied a bow on it.

What did you enjoy most about making "care less.?"

It’s been one of my favorite songs to play live and I’ve actually been enjoying making content for the song on TikTok recently. We’re messing around with showing the song to our friends and getting their reactions and it’s been a fun time.

Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as musicians?

It was around when we were 23, we really decided that we wanted to pursue music for real. Mike and I had been in and out of bands in the past but had been on a quiet spell for a few years during college. It was our first song that we wrote for davvn called “without you” that’s not even on streaming services anymore but you can find it on the depths of YouTube still… that’s what inspired us to get started. We really missed playing music live too. We were also feeling like a 9-5 wasn’t enough for us, we didn’t want to rely on a job for our purpose. We wanted to make a different kind of impact on the world.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

God, I think we can really find inspiration from just about anything. Whether it’s TV or movies, or things that happen to us in real life. I definitely like writing songs with a bit of a double meaning and some tongue in cheek lyrics in there too. I think usually for us the songs that people relate to the best are the ones based on something that actually happened to us. I think that’s when the emotions are at their best and you can really draw from it when you’re writing or performing it.
