Clare Easdown On the Making Of “I Break”
What was the creative process like for this particular "I Break?"
The creative process for "I Break" was firstly being faced with one of the harshest doses of depression I've faced to date. This level of low forcefully propelled me to create "I Break" which aims to empathise with others in the same or similar boats.
Can you talk about the recording and production process for "I Break?"
Absolutely! So JburnsMusic sent me a few beats that he had been working on and I really connected with the one that is now "I Break". The deep dark and brooding beats I felt were perfect to create a track about the brutal depths of depression and mental health disorders in general. I'd then record my vocal layers in my living room then shoot them off to Jeremy who mixed and mastered the track and here it is today! Working with JburnsMusic is awesome. He is an incredible producer and I can't wait to work on more with him.
Have you noticed any particular interpretations or connections that listeners have made with "I Break?"
Yes, actually in a recent review by Lost In The Manor, "I Break" was said to have a deep, gothic essance similar to decade old band 'Evanescent'. As well as others such as 'Paramore', 'Fall Out Boy', 'Ashnikko', 'Emilie Autumn' , 'Daniela Latifa' and 'Ethel Cain'.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?
Sure! I'm a complete misfit, this essence of not fitting in with the mainstream world, is rippled throughout a lot of my songs. I like to create songs based on authentic experience and hope people listening can relate to that rawness in my work. I got started by playing the Cello many moons ago then threw it in wanting to be a singer. However, I only started teaching myself music production in my living room, roughly eight years ago now. I can't imagine doing anything other than music. I feel it is the most powerful artform out. It's love language that hits people hard, deep in their hearts.
What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?
Emotions are everything to me in my music and guide my every step of the way. They are almost like flashing, lit up neon arrows pointing me in the next direction to take with every single track. Emotions are my deep inspiration and a way to really feel into the meaning of each song. I usually channel my emotions by trying to emulate the feeling I'm wanting to express with the sounds, beats and lyrics I choose to run with. I often aim not so much for perfection, rather, an emotive message. Once I feel an emotion is deeply felt in my songs, I want to release it ASAP. Having that raw connection and most importantly a clear message in my music is everything to me. If it can be easily translated and directly felt, I feel my work is done. It's been such a pleasure answering these questions. Thank you so much for having me!
