APRICITY On the Making Of “Allison Wonderland”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Allison Wonderland" and the story it tells?

The song was written by Greg Critchley, whose material is always a source of inspiration.

“Allison Wonderland” tells the story of a girl who is trapped in the depressing reality of her failing relationship.  To substitute this reality, she has created her own world (Wonderland) where everything is perfect and fantastical.

We find out later, however, that the inevitable truth remains with her, that even in this wonderland of her own creation, she can’t fully escape her depression.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for "Allison Wonderland?"

I definitely had the opportunity to work with some great well-known people in the industry. From the songwriter (Greg Critchley), to my producer (Tom Mckay), my engineer (Victor Florencia), and Phil Dimetro, who does my mastering.

Ben Healey had played some amazing guitar on the tune and Rique Franks is always a pleasure to work on back-up vocals with.  I’ve also been lucky to have Davide DiRenzo, who is one of the best drummers in Canada play on all my tracks.

Timing is always key to make sure everyone’s available over certain period of time while putting this song together. Tom and I usually work out all the details first before bringing in the musicians and then laying down the vocals on the tracks. The rest is just magic…🙂

What impact do you hope this single will have on your audience or the music industry?

Well, first I’ll say that the reaction has been very positive so far. It has been important for me to remain diversified in styles / genres in order to keep it interesting for the listeners and to challenge myself as an artist and performer.

I hope that this continues to have a positive impact on my listeners, such that there will always be anticipation of what I might do next!

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they impacted your own sound?

I grew up listening to Kate Bush, Evanescence and Blondie, just to name a few strong vocalists with a strong stage presence with a very storytelling manner, which to me is what the song is about.

Continuing to tell stories in songs is a representation of how they have influenced my own sound.

What has been the most memorable experience or achievement in your music career so far?

I cannot put my finger on one – as the whole experience is very memorable for me. The people I’ve met and the people I’ve been able to work with, all have been a true inspiration, and I am continuing to move forward with this. Looking forward to the rest of the year with live shows and working on some new songs to put out, which will be the finishing elements of my EP.
