Marcus Sukiennik “Unusual Piano Groove”
An unlikely, catchy groove makes a semi-villainous entrance in pianist, composer Marcus Sukiennik’s songbook. Even the composer himself seems puzzled by its origin. Dramatic yet appealing, big personality yet very likable, the unusual piano groove poses as such a unique character with a danceable filmic flair.
Expressive and romantic as Beethoven, dark and mechanic as techno, “Unusual Piano Groove” flickers and shifts through some unusual sonic landscapes. At times, it takes a sudden turn down a dark alley with astringent smell. At time, it paces on stage, waiting for an opera singer to claim its presence. There also exists a cinematic impression that lurks in the darker undertone. There seems to be so many different possibilities that the track could go, and Sukiennik’s treatment is quite unexpected.
The composer adds an authentic industrial twist to the piece, as seen in the music video. Different machines chimes in puffs and clutches on top of the comedic, robotic mimicking groove. It reminds you black and white silent film and even Charlie Chaplin’s Golden Rush, of a very distinguish feel around a drastic mechanic shadow that looms upon us and penetrates deeper into our life, bright yet depressive.
The piece isn’t overly sophisticated, but Sukiennik’s mastery of performance and his profound connection with the instrument is quite obvious. His fingers flow through the keys, in which nuanced expressions are drawn. “Unusual Piano Groove” may have painted him as a mad genius in a way, but he is known for playing jazz and pop oriented music. The track is nice surprise with a touch of destiny or a higher force.
