Chris McGinnis “Tuesday”
“Tuesday” is about loneliness, anger, and heartbreak, standing outside the window in the rain, feeling frustrated about your life when everything seems to spiral down destruction in a hot mess, but the misfortune has an odd sense of humor. As a song that tackles some of the worst feelings in our daily life, “Tuesday” is either heavy or dark, on the contrary, it’s somber but still warmhearted, angsty but witty.
Chris McGinnis creates such an adorable and highly relatable character with his songwriting. From the timber, the guitar, the voice, the storytelling, the narrative, it takes shape in a recently heartbroken person who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, still feeling all the anger and depression. He’s clumsy and blue, angry and stubborn. In core, he’s flawed, but there’s a side of him that is brave and humorous. Instead of burying his feelings, going to work that day, he decides to burn the world down.
He has this cathartic, almost empowering moment when he lets his feelings speak for themselves, roaring and screaming. Speaking about the characters he created, McGinnis talked about flaws and ugliness. “The characters in these songs are all incredibly flawed,” he said, “I wanted to write songs that expressed truly ugly emotions. Loneliness, anger, denial, regret. The characters are all being eaten away by these feelings, and it motivates their words and actions. But I also think that that is how some of the absurdity is palatable.”
Chris McGinnis’ story-soaked vocal is the perfect vessel, combined with a timbered, expressive guitar, shedding light on the manic loneliness we all feel sometimes, but McGinnis’ music always offer a comfort, like a harbor you could retreat to and feel safe against the storms, and that optimism in his sound combined with a full band, adding a few brass, create a light-house like vibe, which is what truly touching for the lonely souls. And the moment when the sound vanishes, that’s when it gets real.
